  • Riverworks Storytellers Series: The Indigenous Peoples of the Agricultural Reserve

    March 9, 2024  3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
19933 Fisher Ave, Poolesville, MD 20837, USA

The lands and waterways of what is now Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve have been used for hunting, fishing, farming, and homes for millennia, though it is a challenge to learn about the experiences and history of its indigenous peoples. Join local professor, writer, and public historian Christine Rai who will be sharing her story of how and what she has uncovered about the Ag. Reserve’s original residents, which she will present in Poolesville’s old town hall, courtesy of the Historic Medley District of Montgomery County.

This free event is a part of a larger project Christine is leading with Riverworks: The Indigenous Peoples of the Potomac Piedmont Community Round Table Project.

Riverworks invites artists and writers to explore a deeper understanding of Maryland’s native peoples, led by Christine Rai. Participants will use curated resources and site visits to inspire a final artwork or creative writing piece inspired by the history and culture of the Ag Reserve’s original inhabitants. Participants have full freedom to define the medium and format of their final work.

The Indigenous Peoples of the Potomac Piedmont Community Round Table project has been financed in part with funds from Heritage Montgomery and Montgomery County Government, and in part with State Funds from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, an instrumentality of the State of Maryland. However, the contents and opinions do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.
